On November 21st, OJCA was represented by our President - Renee Wright Brayden, our Vice President - Robert Brayden and Recording Secretary - Margaret Riess at the Hazel Rhea Hurst community center.
OJCA was fortunate to be able to meet with and speak to several organizations whose purposes are to assist Parish residents in different ways. These included the Quad Area Community Action Program, whose motto is "Helping People. Changing Lives" and includes a program to provide free insulation to qualified households, Jefferson Parish Department of Community Development, which has an 'under one roof' homeowner rehabilitation program, scheduled to be starting up again in 2026. We asked Chirelle Lee, the representative of the weatherization program if a speaker could come to a membership meeting in 2026. We also asked Zika Bailey, the Federal Programs Coordinator for Jefferson Parish if we could contact her as a possible speaker for our 2026 calendar of membership meetings. The Community Action Partnership for Jefferson Parish had a representative available to speak about the “RSVP” Retired & Senior Volunteers Programs. Any retired Jefferson Parish resident may call 504-736-6900 and sign up to volunteer to assist with social service programs that benefit Jefferson Parish senior citizens.
Our table contained hand-out materials showcasing OJCA’s efforts over the past year to represent and inform our community, including a list of OJCA achievements and a sign-up sheet for those interested to receive additional information. We discussed our organization with every senior citizen attending the fair who stopped by to meet us as well as provided both a map and background information on the proposed railroad consolidation and overpass on Jefferson Highway. On a positive note, nearly everyone who stopped by the OJCA table left their contact information for additional railroad information as OJCA receives it, as well picked up our flyer listing our 2026 meeting dates.
